Rational Clarity Earns Trust. Emotional Clarity Earns Choice.

Emotional clarity is what gets you chosen, and carries your story into the rooms you’ll never enter.

A Three-Thousand-Year-Old Story That Still Knows Something We Don’t

Most people think Cinderella is a few hundred years old. A Disney film. A Grimm fairy tale. Maybe, if they’ve thought about it, Charles Perrault’s 1697 version with the glass slipper.

The earliest version is from ancient Egypt. A red-haired girl, nearly three thousand years ago.

Three thousand years. Hundreds of versions. Nearly every culture on earth has its own Cinderella.

Not because of the ball. Not because of the slipper. Not even because of the prince.

Because of her.

She works hard. She’s kind. The people closest to her dismiss her every day. She’s more than what the room around her seems to see. When she’s finally seen, not by the crowd but by one person who recognizes her, everything changes. Not because she changed. Because someone finally saw what was there all along.

That’s the Line. That’s Why the Story Survived.

This was one of my nieces’ favorite movies growing up. They’d watched it so many times they knew every part by heart, and they made me act it out with them. I always got stuck playing Gus, the chubby mouse. But that’s another whole story.

All of which brings me, eventually, to branding and storytelling. Because we are heart-driven creatures.

No matter how rational we tell ourselves we are, we choose with our hearts first, and use our heads to justify the choice afterward.

What the Old-School Branding Models Miss

Last time out, we talked about clarity as what actually builds trust. Here’s the part I left out.

For years, I built brands the classic way. Crisp positioning, clean pyramid, personality and style dialed in. Good work. But something was missing, and the results kept telling me so.

What the classic models didn’t give you was the emotion underneath. The greatest brands always had it. The models I’d been taught didn’t name it.

Simon Sinek eventually gave me the language. Start with why. When I started building brands with the heart at the center, the results changed. Deeper connections. Stories that traveled. Clients who got chosen.

The Heart Is Two-Sided. Why You Do This Work, and Why It Matters to the Person Receiving It.

One without the other is half a brand.

My friend Scott Mann, retired Green Beret, master storyteller, and founder of Rooftop Leadership, taught me three questions to center myself before walking into a room that matters.

Who am I?
Why am I here?
How can I serve?

Your heart is driven by service. Always.

Those three questions, answered honestly, are how you find both sides of it. What you bring, and what the person across from you actually needs.

Rational clarity earns trust. But emotional clarity moves people to remember you, and to carry your story into the rooms you’ll never enter.

What She Said That Changed Everything

I watched this happen with an insurance broker we were branding. In a working session, a leader of client service said this.

“People don’t call about their health benefits when things are going well. They call when they or someone they love is having real problems. I feel it’s such an honor to be able to help people in a time of need, when it matters most.”

In one breath, her whole brand. In that single answer, she named her unique value and the deeper reason her work mattered, to her and to the people she served.

That’s how you build a brand that gets remembered and repeated, for years to come.

✏️ Here’s an idea to try this week

Take out a piece of paper. Write Scott Mann’s three questions down the left side.

Who am I?
Why am I here?
How can I serve?

Answer them honestly, about the work you do and the people you do it for. Not the polished version. The real one. Sit with each question until the true answer arrives, not the first one that sounds good. Come back to it tomorrow, and the day after.

When all three are answered honestly, you’ll feel it. That’s how you know you’ve found the truth.

That’s where becoming the Obvious Choice™ actually begins.
